FAQ - Grad Students
I am looking for an undergraduate student helper. How do I post a new opportunity?
The current Undergrad Rep. handles listing all of the opportunities. Download the Graduate Mentor Project Request form, complete it, and email it to the Undergrad Rep.
I need help with my project, but I don't have experience with mentoring students.
That's ok! The idea of mentorship can be intimidating, especially if you are a younger graduate student, but mentorship a great social skill to build and you will learn a lot about yourself during the process. Some things to keep in mind...
No one is perfect, even people who have been mentoring for years run into hiccups.
The most important thing to remember is that everyone, including you, have unique personalities. Always remain cognizant of the fact that you think and communicate differently than others. Your mentorship style may need to shift student to student.
The only way you will truly learn is by doing, but there are a lot of resources available to prepare yourself.
We are in the process of creating a 'Mentorship Handbook' that compiles a bunch of different information about various mentoring aspects.
There are periodical opportunities for structured learning about mentoring at UofL such as the Mentorship Academy. If you need advice, the Undergrad Rep., your peers, and even your faculty mentor are all great resources.
